Protecting Pitchers' Arms
Cal Ripken currently does not have any rules in place to limit pitch counts, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take it upon ourselves to be responsible coaches and help protect our kids. Remember to take into account if your players are taking private lessons, throwing in practices, or if they play other positions that require a lot of throwing (i.e. Catcher). Below is an article from the American Sports Medicine Institute, endorsed by James Andrews, that you can use as a pitch guideline for pitch counts on your team.
Pitch Limits:
Days of Rest: 66+ = 4 calendar days of rest.
Coaches are required to log pitch counts into the "Pitchers Log" upstairs at the scorekeeper table. Any pitcher who pitched but is not logged in will be required to sit the max of 4 days rest. |
Pitching Machines
